Thailand has many different attractions to offer, which is why it might be difficult to decide what to visit during a short trip. Here are some places you can go to if you’re traveling to Thailand for the first time, or you’re simply coming back and hoping to visit something different:
Visit a landmark: No trip to Thailand is complete without visiting The Grand Palace. If you’re travelling to Bangkok, this is one tourist attraction you definitely need to save time for. This palace was the home of the Thai king for almost 150 years, and it is a great way to learn about the country’s rich history. Make sure you start early in the day to avoid the crowds and dress appropriately, if you want to get through the gate.
Go to the market: Thailand’s capital is also home to the unique and tourist-friendly Floating Markets. Visitors can buy fruits and drinks from vendors who sell their products on small colorful boats (hence the name). Floating kitchens are also popular in these markets, and visitors flock to try traditional Thai dishes. Taling Chan Market (you can get there on the BTS) and Bang Ku Wian Market are only some of the many floating markets which you can visit.
Go to the beach: Beach holidays are very popular in Thailand and it’s not hard to figure that out when looking at the many resorts scattered across the country. If you’re travelling to Phuket, a popular destination among tourists, there are various luxury options at non-ridiculous prices e.g., Aleenta Resort and Spa Phuket Phang Nga, or neighboring Amari Phuket. Consider whether you want to be in your own bungalow or villa, or you want a more traditional hotel room. Also consider whether you want to go local with massages (very cheap but no privacy and variable quality) or you want a hotel with a spa, which will provide massage services more similar to what you’re used to (e.g., a private room and less intensity in the massage!).
Choosing which beach destination to go to can be overwhelming. The most important thing is to consider the monsoon seasons (see this interactive map) so you don’t have an excessively rainy trip or rough seas. After that, consider whether you want to go flashpacker style or more lux. Holidays to Thailand can be done at all budget levels.
Go island hopping: Staying in a resort can be a relaxing experience, but if you’re looking for some variety, then island hopping in Thailand might do the trick. Phuket is a great starting point due to its resorts, but the neighbouring coastal town of Krabi is just as good if you’re looking for world-class snorkelling spots and great beaches (Railay Beach is sought after by locals and tourists alike). You can easily rent a boat or a kayak to travel through the Gulf of Thailand and discover unspoiled beaches and diving spots.
Visit a temple: Thailand has many temples you can visit, but if you happen to be in Bangkok, then Wat Arun (also knows as Wat Chaeng or Temple of Dawn) is a must. This imposing structure offers a unique insight into Thailand’s history, but it is also a suitable place where you can relax and meditate. Wat Arun isn’t crowded early in the morning, so you can visit it then to avoid the mass of tourists, but you can also stop by before it gets dark to gaze at the spectacular sunset. Make sure you dress appropriately and save up at least an hour to explore the temple properly. You can also climb the steep central steps and enjoy the view.
Whether you’re coming to Thailand for its pristine beaches and snorkelling, or you want to immerse yourself in the vibrant city life, we don’t know ANYONE who dislikes Thailand. You are virtually guaranteed to have an unforgettable experience!
